New years resolutions = An excuse to procrastinate!
This is the first year I’ve never given any thought to ‘New Years resolutions’. Of course, there’s certain goals I want to achieve in 2025, however that’s not because it’s a new year, but because the timing is right. I didn’t say on December 26th ‘From January 1st, I am going to read a chapter from a self development book a day’. Why couldn’t I start on December 26th? Why did I have to wait for the coming Wednesday to do it? If I had started immediately, I’d already be a week ahead.
I strongly believe that many people use New Year’s resolutions as a comfort blanket to delay their goals. It’s easier to say, “I’ll start next month,” than to confront the hard truth: you could start today but aren’t doing so. If you can think of multiple things that need to be changed in your life, why haven’t you done it? Do you genuinely believe that flipping the calendar from December 31st to January 1st will suddenly make you more motivated or committed?
Take fitness goals, for example. It’s now January 9th, and I’m sure many people who vowed to hit the gym daily from January 1st have already missed a session or two. That’s because January 1st isn’t magical, and resolutions don’t work unless you do. You need to actually work for your goals regardless of the day. Waiting for a specific date to start a goal is procrastination in disguise. Whether it’s January 1st, April 6th, or any random Tuesday, there’s no difference in the effort it takes to start working toward your goals.
Waiting for the ‘perfect time’ is rarely a winning strategy. Opportunities and progress don’t wait. So, if there’s something you want to achieve, don’t delay it
Another thought: If the people around you are only motivated by New Year’s resolutions, it might be time to rethink your circle. Surrounding yourself with people who are driven and motivated year-round can have a big impact on your mindset and productivity, whether you realise it or not. Being part of a group that constantly strives for growth, regardless of the date, will inspire you to take consistent action toward your goals and break free from the limitations of 'waiting for the right time.' Success thrives in an environment of consistent effort, not seasonal motivation.
