Grow not swell!
Ever heard the expression that people should ‘leave their ego at the door’?
Why just leave it at the door?
Do you just pick it back up when you leave the room, therefore suggesting you evidence a different set of behaviours at other times?
Surely an inflated, self-centred ego can do more widespread harm than just when in meetings?
What about the impact on the person themselves as well as those around them?
I believe the inability to show vulnerability, stay authentic and grounded and be humble in victory as well defeat can all have damaging consequences over time.
Why?
We all need people to be there for us in times of need! If and when the ego takes over and we believe we know everything we clearly don’t listen and we definitely don’t learn. Confidence becomes arrogance. It is a fixed mindset (‘my way or the highway!’) and we are easily blindsided by disruption and change.
It is the inability to be inquisitive, curious, to ask lots of questions and be open to potential, new opportunities and learning.
When it comes to leadership, people are doing it despite and not for the boss. Rarely does a person find true success and happiness all on their own.
I see an ego is often a suit of armour which people put on to compensate for a lack of confidence and self-belief. It hides our heart and our true selves. It becomes the enemy of achievement. Instead of leaving it at the door, check it in permanently.
Grow not swell.
